KFOR-TV

  Dylan Buckingham stopped by the class on Thursday and talked to us about the business.  He was extremely helpful and gave some advice for the media business.

“Don’t burn bridges.”

“Do internships.”

“Utilize every outlet you have available to you”

"Start to enjoy what you do."

 I take these pieces of advice to heart because I know they can help later on

Once the two speakers were finished we got to go tour KFOR-TV.  Like KWTV it made me motivated to work hard on the UCO newscast so I can possibly have an opportunity at a job in the future.

 Getting to meet Scott Hines was pretty awesome and one of the Ogles too.  I found it funny they have Scott Hines in a corner.  Also Kevin Ogle accidentally photo-bombed one of my pictures so that was cool too

Media Revenues

Vance Harrison gave strong advice on how to make it in the media profession.  He told us to be enthusiastic in the interviews and interviewers love that.  One thing that stuck with me though is when he said to follow the money.  Newspaper revenues have gone down or 40 billion dollars since 2,000.  This makes me want to go more into television because at least it has stayed pretty much the same over the years.  He made it clear to go where the money goes because like in newspaper, people are more likely to be let go.  I feel as if there is a better chance of sticking in
television.

After Vance came we had Mark Norman Director of Technology for OETA stop by to visit.  He brought up some advantages to working in Public television compared to commercial television.  I like the fact in Public you have more time on a project.  In commercial you have to get stuff out more quickly.  In public you have more time to be creative with your projects which too me is good.  Also the educational programming is better for me.  Instead of just news which can be kind of depressing we can learn stuff.

“TV isn’t just about chasing ambulances or the disasters of the world.”

This quote stuck with me because it is true.  It seems all we see on television today is negative things about the world when, in reality, there are many positive educational things that are not being shown.

I thought that mark was a great guest and he put the thought of working in public television at least into the back of my mind.  I had never considered it before but it is now a possibility.

 

KWTV

Day 2 of my Oklahoma City Media Tour Class. Today we got to meet News 9 reporter of two years.  She was interesting and  I felt like she gave great advice for being in the broadcasting business.She gave great advice the time she was with us.

"Always be prepared. Anything can and will happen.”
"Keep Contacts."
"The most important thing for a reporter is to follow up stories."
"It about your personality, what you do, who you know, and how tenacious you are."

"You got to take big risks to get big rewards"

After the speaker we were lucky enough to go on a tour of the KWTV station.  Talk about motivation to get out and find a job.  Seeing how everything works basically had me in awe the entire time I was there.  Being in the control room and studio during the newscast was probably the best experience in college I have had.  I am a technical director for UCO's newscast so it was great getting to see professionals in action.  Rusty Surrette and Michael Armstrong were great and answered all of our questions.  One of the best parts of the tour that however was getting to hang out with Jim Gardner and look inside the Helicopter.
 I learned a lot between the speaker and on the tour of the station as well.
It was a motivating experience.

Introduction

The purpose of this blog is to show people what I actually want to do after I graduate college and what I learned from class.  This blog will show anything from statistics about to television to what actually goes on behind the scenes in making a newscast.  I always thought I wanted to be in front of camera but this year I began to want to be behind the scenes. I want to be in the control room and I will show and tell you why in my upcoming entries.  I have wanted to be in the media business ever since I was a kid.  I grew up watching sports and I new at a very young age that I wanted to be in the media, print or television.  Once I started learning about what goes on in the control room I knew that it would be an option for me after I graduated. The future entries will consist of picture and information about these pictures.
